The definition of stability is described in stonemasonry's lessons of repetition and workmanship. This ancient teaching is still practiced today... and, given it's in (an older) English, it's much easier to translate than the ancient myths.
These procedures are interpreted such that the 3 Masonic Pillars support a functional, oscillating widget at a point in the middle.
The proposal:
This widget represents the forces acting on the Earth while its traveling through the cosmos.
This widget is a metaphor of how a mason can act 'upright' and moral.
The creation of this widget allows for a physical device to fill in the gaps of the moral lessons, and the moral lessons fill in the gaps of the physical device.

After searching the corners of the cosmos, it was discovered that only humans use corners.
The universe seems perfectly content with loops, ellipses, spirals, and wandering clouds of gas. Humans, meanwhile, keep showing up with rulers, graph paper, floor plans, spreadsheets, and decided to invent corners to communicate with the surrounding world.
